The D1999 code developed by the ADA is commonly used to report unspecific preventive procedures, but in this case, the equipment is required in dental surgeries such as PPE. This code provides dentists with correct ways of billing and documenting PPE use during patient visits, including standard billing codes.
Dentists can ensure consistency in billing for PPE by implementing these protocols:
- Set a general standard procedure to wear PPE whenever being around the patient.
- Possibly the need to create a standard rate that can be applied to fees for PPEs regardless of the number of visits to the facility.
- Document in detail the PPE used on each patient and charge according to the type of PPE used.
- Provide an 80-character description in the remarks section for any CDT codes identified as “by report” on ADA claim forms.
D1999 can be reported per visit making it easier for dental practices to report PPE costs in a transparent manner as they continue to ensure that their patients and staff are protected from the virus.
